Alabama's "Old Flame" written by Mac included on tribute album
When High Cotton: A Tribute to Alabama comes out Sept. 17, it’s sure to “Feel So Right” to fans of that quintessentially ‘80s country band — but also to Americana buffs.
Artists like Todd Snider, Elizabeth Cook, Bob Schneider, Jessica Lee Mayfield, Old Crow Medicine Show and more reinterpret some of Alabama’s much-loved Southern anthems, fusing those tender yet fun-loving lyrics with fresh vigor.
Our first taste of the project comes from Jason Isbell and the Civil Wars’ John Paul White, who prove to be an unlikely but potent duo. They’ve chosen 1981’s “Old Flame” as their canvas, stripping out the drums and filling that space with delicate fiddle (most likely from Isbell’s wife Amanda Shires) and a powerful vocal blend. The track has been slowed slightly, but that just means more time for wallowing with your broken heart.
